I have started celebrating the 550th anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji by reading and re -reading all scholarly historical literature related to him. 🙏
As a student of Punjab history, with emphasis on history of the Sikhs, it was a pleasure for me today to read the research article containing the pioneering hypothesis of a great but controversial scholar Professor W H McLeod, born in New Zealand and worked in Batala, and later elsewhere all over the world, being substantially demolished bit by bit by another authority in History, Professor J S Grewal, through a subsequent critique on the grounds of use of inappropriate research tools, inadequate sources, departures from the strict discipline of historiography and showing more interest in Sikh tradition than in Sikh history. McLeod demystified and unveiled Sikhism to the western world, Grewal edited his hypothesis with great scholarly chisel and put the findings in correct perspective. History constitutes many layers of evolving findings and interpretations in search of truth.
I happened to be a junior contemporary of these great scholars and always looked at them with a great intellectual awe.
